Verizon customers will soon be able to connect to the internet wirelessly in their homes. Verizon Communications recently announced their next offering to consumers: wireless residential broadband services. This 5G wireless service will use radio signals, rather than copper or fiber cables, to provide customers with access. Although this technology is still in development, Verizon is launching in three to five cities, starting with Sacramento, California. The company anticipates that 5G technology will provide its customers with faster, better internet access.
If companies like Verizon and AT&T successfully introduce wireless broadband, consumers stand to potentially benefit with greater competition, better prices and improved performance. In addition, the ease with which a company can provide wireless home service will allow consumers to get it quicker. Faster access and greater possibility of expansion can only benefit wireless broadband customers.
However, wireless broadband is not without its obstacles. Typically, wired services provide faster service and can cost significantly less than wireless services. Also, since 5G signals have less range, more towers would have to be built to transmit a stronger signal. 5G technology is also less reliable than current LTE technology. A 5G signal can easily be disrupted by an obstruction such as leaves or a car parked in front of it. As the company works to improve reliability, the promise of faster service is very appealing.
Verizon, which spent more than $20 billion 10 years ago building out fiber optic cables is now selling off many of its wireline assets.
