How to Maximize Your Travel Rewards This Summer

Travel can be a lot more rewarding when you have the right credit card. Unfortunately, many travelers are not aware of the perks. According to a new research report by Market Strategies International, “80% of card users are unclear about the benefits of their primary credit card.”

If you’re a frequent traveler, having the right card can save you a great deal of money, time and potential aggravation. Here’s what to look for when you’re evaluating a new card, or simply using your existing one:

Travel Insurance

Even the best-laid plans can go awry. Although credit cards have limited insurance, it’s worth taking advantage of the protection they offer. That can include 24-hour accident insurance for travel injury as well as assistance for accident and medical expenses. If you have been inconvenienced by luggage delays, missed connections or cancelled flights, your card should offer some coverage.

Emergency Services

Hopefully, you never need to navigate an emergency on a trip. However, in the event of an urgent situation, a credit card can offer 24/7 support by providing medical referrals, contacting family members, and arranging for payments. If you lose your card, a credit card company should be able to replace it within 24 hours with a possibility of a cash advance if needed.

Lost Luggage

Nothing puts a damper on your trip like lost luggage. Buying necessities to get you through those first days can be expensive. Look for cards that offer compensation for at least a couple of days while you await the arrival of your belongings.

Points

Many credit cards offer double or triple points on travel spending which can then be used toward airlines, hotels and other purchases. Some credit cards offer access to VIP services like airport lounges. Some even offer credits toward travel expenses like TSA PreCheck and Uber.

So before you take a trip this summer, check out your existing primary card or get a new one that offers the best perks and savings.
